Description
Ajuga Bugleweed, also Lycopsus Americanus, is a Fast Growing Herbaceous Perennial.
Ajuga Bugleweed Plant-Ajuga reptans is often called Ajuga or bugleweed. This herbaceous perennial is a fast-growing member of the mint family, known to spread quickly through runners. The reptans part of its Latin name means "to creep." It is a naturalized North American plant that was introduced from several places in Europe and Asia.
Ajuga Bugleweed is an Excellent Ground Cover that Spreads into Dense Mats of Lovely Foliage
Bugleweed plants grow well in Hardiness Zones 3 through 10. They tolerate almost any soil type, though they prefer slightly acidic. Fully grown plants stand 6" to 8" high; flower stalks can grow to 12". Each plant may spread up to 12", and they quickly form mats, especially in shaded areas beneath other trees and shrubs.
This perennial is hardy enough to grow beneath black walnut trees. The growth speed of the Ajuga bugleweed can be controlled by where they are planted. Plants in shadier areas tend to grow faster than those in sunnier regions. The bugleweed is best planted in rock gardens, containers, edged beds, or wide-open spaces that quickly need ground cover. They lend themselves well to erosion control.
It would help if you did not plant them near any more tiny hardy flowers at home as they may choke them out. Bugleweeds should be periodically divided and thinned, at minimum every third year. They flower through the spring and summer, generally beginning in May or June. Pinching off runners helps with this, too.
Bugleweed flowers are blue, purple, or white, though there is at least one cultivar with pink flowers. Other cultivar strains have leaves that are multi-colored or variegated. Beyond thinning, the Ajuga Bugleweed is relatively low-maintenance. It needs no extra fertilizer and is worry-free against most garden pests. However, in areas of high humidity, care should be taken to ensure appropriately drained soil prevents southern rot.
This perennial is deer and rabbit resistant. The botanical name of Ajuga reptans or common bugleweed tells much about its habits, as reptans means creeping. It can take a lawn for people who don't want to do the work that keeps a garden looking green and luxuriant throughout the growing season. Though it keeps down the weeds, bugleweed can be a bit aggressive, and it's a good idea to divide the plants between the spring and the fall. It can propagate through runners that root into the soil.
Besides its beautiful flowers, bugleweed's foliage also comes in shades of green, purple, bronze, or creamy white with splotches of dark pink. In some varieties, the foliage is evergreen or semi-evergreen. Ajuga Bugleweed Plants grow in whorls and attract bees in the late spring and early summer. Ajuga Bugleweed Plant
Ajuga Plant is a Perennial Herbaceous Flowering Plant
Ajuga Plant: Ajuga reptans Known for its dark green leaves and blue, purple, pink, or white flowers, the ajuga plant is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant known by many names, such as "bugle," "carpetweed," the "St. Lawrence plant," and even as the "carpenter's herb" because in traditional medicine it was believed to help stem bleeding. The plant, native to the woods and rough pastures of Ireland and Great Britain, is commonly used as a groundcover in the partially shady areas of many gardens due to its quick, dense growth, tendency to smother weeds, and easy upkeep.
This Plant is Commonly Used as Ground Cover in Partially Shady Areas of Garden
This perennial spreads into dense mats of attractive foliage topped with whorls of flowers in white, pink, violet, or blue that arrive from May to June. The foliage comes in shades of green, purple, and cream mottled with pink or bronze.
Because it grows thicker than tall, ajuga makes an excellent ground cover, both for its good looks and suppression of weeds. It grows via underground stolons, and its botanical name means "creeping." Though it does prefer moist, fertile soil, it can do well in dry soils. The plant is placed in an area where it gets at least three to four hours of sun a day for the best foliage.
It needs little care, but in hot and humid climates, the plants need arranging so that air can circulate freely around them. If the ajuga plants become too crowded, they can divide in the spring or fall, and they should cut back when the flowers fade to highlight the beautiful foliage.
When planting, put the plants 6 to 9 inches apart. Ajuga can tolerate the depredations of rabbits and deer and plant near black walnut trees, which often poison other plants. It's an ideal plant for those shady areas where few plants with pretty flowers will grow. Ajuga also beautifies slopes and banks and provides beautiful regions of color around shrubs and trees.
