The Black Oak Tree or Quercus Velutina is a fast growing, medium to large tree that is commonly found in the Eastern United States and Canada. Their summer leaves are a shiny dark green, but in the autumn they change to a muted red shade. Each leaf is approximately 5 to 10 inches long with 7 to 9 lobes. The acorns of the Black Oak are a favorite among squirrels and deer enjoy the small twigs and leaves. The bark on the young trees is very smooth and gray, as the tree matures it produces deep vertical furrows and the bark turns to dark, soot black. What is so unique about the Black Oak tree is its alternative nickname the “Yellow Oak” tree. This is because the inside of the bark is a rich golden-yellow color. This magnificent tree is usually used to mark perimeters around a property or where shade is needed.  It is also favored for its brilliant autumn foliage.

This tree is also known as the Water Oak. This is a great tree and will make a wonderful shade tree for your lawn. It will grow to be around 50 to 80 feet high when fully grown. It will grow well in full sunlight. This tree will also adapt to various soil conditions. It will grow 3 or more feet each year. This tree will provide you fantastic colors during the Fall months for you to enjoy. This is a great tree to also attract a wide variety of wildlife.
