Climacium Tree Moss is Native to the Northeastern United States
Climacium Tree Moss and several species of tree moss are found throughout the United States, with Climcium americanum growing in southern climes and Climacium dendroides taking up a northeastern habitat. Depending on the species, tree moss can withstand cold Zone 2 temperatures up to milder Zone 7 climates. Regardless of species, these luscious, evergreen ground covers add depth and texture to various landscapes and garden themes, from water gardens to nature gardens to vibrant ground covers layered among formal beds.
Climacium Tree Moss is Considered one of the Easiest Mosses to Grow.
Climacium grows naturally alongside streams, taking root in moist and damp soils that are rocky and full of hummus. This makes the plant the perfect ground cover for hard-to-grow areas in your garden. It thrives in partial sun and will do well in areas where lawn and grass do not.
Climacium Tree Moss maintains its vibrancy throughout the winter months due to its evergreen nature.
Climacium isn't called tree moss because it grows on trees but rather because it has a tree-like appearance. The moss features a spiky branch that grows up to 2-inches high, with mature plants attaining a 6-inch spread.
Each branchlet produces pin-shaped leaves that have a similar appearance to pine needles. However, unlike pine needles, tree moss leaves are soft to the touch, and the overall impression is that of crushed, deep green velvet. Older leaves are dark olive green, mid-life leaves are a shade or two lighter, and younger leaves are light, vibrant green. The variety of shades magnifies the ground cover's textural appeal. The younger branchlets and leaves have a reddish tinge, further adding to the depth of color.
Mature tree mosses send out runners, but the moss is not a fast grower, so there is no need to worry about it taking over a yard.
