Aronia melanocarpais a genus of deciduous shrubs. They are native to eastern North America and are usually found in swamps and wet woodland areas. These shrubs are used for ornamental gardening and as a food source.
The berries can be eaten straight from the bush and taste very tart. Many people pucker when eating the chokeberries, which is why they got their name. These are commonly used in wine, juice, syrup, jam, beer, tea, salsa, chili, gummies, and ice cream.
This shrub is small to medium in size. It typically grows two to three feet in height and three to four feet in width. It blooms in the spring, the flowers are small white clusters, and when they mature, they turn into blackberries.
The flower clusters are two to two and a half inches in width. The dark green foliage of the plant turns a reddish-purple shade in the fall.
