Description
Fiddlehead Ferns are a Deciduous Perennial
The Fiddlehead fern plant is a perennial plant and will come back year after year. The fantastic green color that this plant displays constantly improves the look of a house. The plant grows best in the USDA zones 3-9. Fiddlehead Ferns Grow Best in the Shade and Grow about 4 ft High by Mid-Summer
Flower Form: The deciduous ostrich fern grows in circular clumps and spreads by underground runners. The large green ostrich plume-shaped fronds reach 5' before dying back in the fall. The frond's leaflets are twice divided (bipinnate). A few weeks after the first green fronds appear in spring, brown spore-covered fronds emerge from the center.
Fiddlehead Ferns are known for the tasty fiddleheads consumed by humans.
They are smaller than the first green fronds and, in ideal conditions, can create new plants from these spores. Fiddleheads, or young croziers, are harvested for food. According to multiple resources, Ostrich fern is considered the safest for consumption.
CAUTION: all fiddleheads should be cooked before eating and consumed in moderation until you are sure how you will react to them.
