Description
May Apple is a Herbaceous Perennial
May Apple is native to North American deciduous forests. The May Apple grows under the forest canopy, flowers, and withers during late summer.
Hardier than some other ephemerals, the May Apple grows to 30–40 cm tall with thick stems that produce two to three palmately lobed foliage leaves of up to 30 cm in diameter. Of those, five to nine of the cut lobes reproduce. The 3-5 cm diameter flower blooms pale yellow. As it matures, it turns into a fruit.
May Apple is also Called the Indian Apple, Hog Apple, Mayflower, Umbrella Plant, Wild Lemon, or Wild Mandrake.
Seen throughout the Eastern woodlands of Canada and the United States, the May Apple is typically entangled in rhizome systems of many wild plants and flowers.
The green environment makes the plant fecund for sexual reproduction. Far-distance dispersal of the seeds, which appear like circular clones, reproduces annually. The protection of the forest ensures replication. May Apple is such a great addition to any home!
