Description
Sawgrass
Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) is a type of grass that grows in wetland areas. It can grow to ten feet and has a wavy blade. It has a long spike of flowers at the top of the stem (called a panicle) with male and female flowers on separate spikes.
Sawgrass belongs to the sedge family and is native to North America, but it also grows in southern Europe and Australia. It grows in USDA Zones 3 through 7, so it is crucial to protect this grass when temperatures are below freezing point.
Other Common Names For Cladium Jamaicense
Some gardeners might refer to this grass as:
- Swamp sawgrass
- Great fen-sedge
- Saw-sedge
- Sawtooth sedge
Sawgrass Is Easy To Love
Sawgrass is a tropical grass readily available in the TN Nursery and can be grown in many parts of the country. Sawgrass typically grows in marshy areas but can also be found in large pots or containers. It's easy to care for and requires little maintenance once established.
Sawgrass is best grown in full sun and moist soil that drains well. This grass can tolerate most soil types but does best in soils with good drainage. The pH level should be between 6 and 8 for the optimum growth of sawgrass.
Maintain an even moisture level throughout the year by watering deeply once a week during spring and summer, but reduce watering during fall and winter when temperatures are cooler.
Sawgrass does not need fertilizing once grown because its roots reach deep into the soil to find nutrients from decaying plant material from its previous years' growth. However, for your first plant, provide additional nutrients by applying compost or other organic material at planting time or shortly after that.
The Lovely Appearance Of The Sawgrass
The sawgrass plant has green or brown blades. The leaves are flat, which gives them a saw-like appearance. The leaves also have serrated edges resembling teeth, where the plant gets its name.
The flower heads are small and spike-shaped, but they are not showy blooms like those of other types of ornamental grasses, for instance, bamboo or fountain grasses.
