Shortleaf Pine Trees will tolerate colder soil temperatures than many of the other trees in the family.

This Pine can grow in many different types of environments and will tolerate colder soil temperatures than many of the other trees in the family.
Shortleaf Pine is well known for its ability to produce an attractive crown at its top.
This tree can grow in a range of soil types and does not begin to produce seeds or fruit until it matures around the age of 12. This tree is well known for its ability to produce an attractive crown at its top that does not produce a large amount of width.
The short limbs of this Pine are topped by attractive cones each Spring to early Summer. Fruit production is essential to producing more pine trees, with the female version of the flower being brown and the male a deeper purple color.
This evergreen tree does not produce leaves but has several flexible pines clustered in two and three from a single sprout. A significant tree for the lumber industry, it is often scaly and dark across its trunk when young.
As the tree grows older and matures, it produces a smoother appearance, giving way to yellow-light brown wood beneath when the outer layer is removed. The ease of growth of this Pine is one of the main reasons for its success across the southern portions of the U.S.
