Sumac is Considered a Large Shrub or Small Tree
Sumac is a large shrub or small tree standing 16 feet tall at maturity. This plant is woody with long, pinnately compound leaves. The velvety feel and forking pattern of the leaves and branching are the source of the name Staghorn.
It is a tree that flowers with densely packed cone-shaped deep red flowers. These seedlings are a favorite plant with gardeners in their natural form and cut to resemble palm trees. It thrives in dry, poor soil where most other garden plants die. It is hardy from USDA Zone 3 to 8.
