Chinese Wisteria is one of the most ornamental vines in gardening, wisteria provides a colorful curtain of cascading flowers and shade canopies

In the spring and summer, the plant offers long-lasting scented blooms, while the fall and winter see the plant transitioning to an attractive bunch of twisted branches. There are about ten known varieties of wisteria native to both North American and Eastern Asia.

Chinese Wisteria is one of the most popular due to its large and fragrant blooms and the variety of colors this vine offers to gardeners

The deciduous nature of this perennial climbing vine hails from multiple provinces throughout China. The strong propensity to flower for about three months each season makes it a popular choice for home gardens. Although the Chinese Wisteria is naturally a climbing vine, gardeners can sculpt it to resemble a tree with a flattened top, making it an extremely versatile species of plant.

Chinese Wisteria will delight gardeners with its frequent blooming and bursting colors

The Chinese Wisteria can grow up to 20–30 meters long when given the proper supporting trees to cling. In the spring, the blooms are white, violet, or blue. When the plant is in its infant stages, the leaves tend to be copper or bronze in color. The fast-growing plant can grow up to ten feet per year in optimal conditions.

Officially designated as shade tolerant, the blooms will only open when exposed to the partial sun, preferring full amounts of sun to thrive. The plant flourishes in USDA plant hardiness zones 5-9 and is more sensitive to cold than its North American counterparts. The Chinese Wisteria thrives when planted in moist and well-drained soils with added compost. Although the plant can take up to 20 years to fully mature, it can live for more than 100 years, making it one of the hardiest plants in its class.
