Greater Periwinkle - several names in the US know phlox divaricata: Sweet William, Louisiana Phlox, and Blue Moon, among others. Fragrant flowers from April top this ground covering plant until June throughout most of its range. The five-petaled flowers may be lavender or light blue, and they last about a month once they bloom. The foliage ranges in color from bright green to medium green.

This plant is drought and dry soil tolerant, as well as deer resistant. It makes an excellent ground cover, borders, and adds a bit of flair to wild gardens. Greater Periwinkle grows in many Midwestern fields and woodlands. Greater Periwinkle flowers attract many species of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It is a North American native herbaceous perennial plant, found in eastern Canada and the US. It does best in humus with a bit of moisture and adequate drainage. In the summer, light mulching can help retain moisture in flower beds around the house. Interestingly, it is such a hardy plant that some colonies are believed to be left over from the last great North American Ice Age. Some strains will survive winters where the temperatures fall to below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Greater Periwinkle prefers part shade to full shade. It grows to between 8 and 12 inches in height, and each plant spreads from 8 to 12 inches. Greater Periwinkle has a medium growth rate.

Vinca Major is also known as Big Leaf Periwinkle. This plant has large green leaves and produces gorgeous tiny small flowers during the spring on into the fall months of the year. It grows well when planted in moist soil conditions. Greater Periwinkle is a great plant.
