Rough blazing star is a plant known botanically as Liatris aspera from the family Asteraceae and belongs to the aster family.
This plant may also be referred to as Button Blazing Star and Greyfeather. The plant blooms purple flowers from August to October. The flowers of the plant resemble rose to purple stars. The flowers are rounded with spike petals that can grow 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches long often curling. The stems are green and covered with grayish hairs. The leaves of the plant grow crowded together, and toward the base, the leaves can be up to a foot long with a whorled appearance. The leaves are a smooth dull green or bluish green and narrow. As the flowers fade, the plant can drop seeds that will start offspring plants nearby. The flower is a perennial that grows best in moist to dry soil. The soil can contain significant amounts of sand, clay, loam or rocky material.
The plant produces easily if located in well-drained soil, but if the ground is too fertile or moist, it can result in the plant flopping over when flowering and can ruin the blooms.
In drought conditions, the only noticeable effect to the plant is some of the lower leaves may dry. The blooms attract long-tongued bees, Little Carpenter bees, Minor bees, honeybees, and bumblebees. The flowers also attract Monarch butterflies, Black Swallowtails, Sulfur and other butterflies including the rare Glorious Flower Moth (Schinia Florida). The hardiness of the flower, the bees and butterflies it attracts make this a perfect flower for the garden, walkway, driveway borders, and other landscaping areas. The flower takes little to no maintenance even during droughts.
