What is peat moss? Well, what is commonly known as Sphagnum peat moss is a soil amendment to potting soil that many gardeners use to enhance those plants that thrive in an acid-loving environment, such as blueberries and many camellias. As a rule, it's applied in a 2:1 ratio and typically, two parts soil to one part peat moss.
Consisting of a dead fibrous material formed in peat bogs that are replete with decomposing living material, peat moss is often used as compost. Sometimes taking several millennia to form, this slow-growing plant is not renewable, and it's interesting to note that most moss is imported from Canadian wetland bogs.
Depending on the plant zone in which you will use the peat moss, peat moss may not be the best use of a soil enhancer with the companion plant that grows best in that zone.

Not to be confused with sphagnum moss, the material consists of long, fibrous strands of plant material and is primarily used by florists to line wire baskets, decorate small nativity scenes, or add a distinctive touch to potted plants. Sphagnum peat moss has several characteristics related to its physical appearance.
A dark, fibrous, and compacted material typically forms after decomposing other organic materials, which generally take centuries to develop. Unique branch clusters, plant and stem colors, the shape of the branch, and its stems all help identify peat moss from other plant species. Furthermore, there are no roots due to the lack of internal systems for fluid circulation. Its most significant benefit is that it's highly absorbent, sterile, contains few microorganisms, has flexible acidic ph features, and much more.
