Hickory trees are deciduous trees native to North America. They are part of the Juglandaceae family and are common in the eastern United States and Canada, with some growing as far west as California and Texas. These medium-sized trees grow 60 to 80 feet tall and 20 to 40 feet wide.
Foliage
Hickory trees feature an open growth habit and stunning autumn colors. Their compound, pinnate leaves add a graceful appearance to any landscape. They thrive in full sun but tolerate partial shade if it’s not prolonged.
They prefer moist, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) and rich in organic matter. Avoid overly wet soils that may cause root issues. Hickory trees grow quickly in their early years but slow down once mature. Minimal pruning is needed, primarily for aesthetics.
Leaves and Foliage Structure
The trees have compound leaves with 12 to 20 leaflets arranged in pairs along the midrib, creating lush greenery and visual interest throughout the growing season.
