Larkspur Delphenium plants are recognizable for their airy, towering spikes of blossoms. While blue is the most common color, varieties also exist in violet, white, red, yellow, and pink. Traditional species can reach up to nine feet, while modern varieties grow to about four feet.
A member of the Ranunculaceae family, these flowers have long-lasting blooms, even after being cut. They exist as annuals, biennials, and perennials. Native to the Northern Hemisphere, they are also known as Delphinium, Lark's Claw, Knight's Spur, Consolida Ajacis, and Lark's Heel.
The petals form a hollow-like pocket that blooms from late spring to late summer. Each flower has between two and five spurs near the apex and a black or white center, called a bee.
Larkspur leaves are palmate, typically with three to seven lobes, varying by species. Its deep green, soft, fern-like foliage provides a striking backdrop for the colorful blooms.
Larkspur Delphenium Plants are deer and drought-resistant. They are low-maintenance and attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds during warm months. Landscapers often use them for garden edging, backdrops, and walkways. Their vibrant colors and horizontal growth make them a unique and versatile choice for any garden.
