Red Hibiscus shrubs is a classic garden species with a maximum reach of about twelve feet and a width of eight feet. Simply put, it is a charming woody shrub. It can add vivid color to any sunny location in your landscape.

Red Hibiscus Shrubs Doesn't Care About Soil Quality

The Red Hibiscus Syriacus is an Asian native species. However, it is well-adapted to the mid-range U.S.D.A. growing zones within the United States. It cares little about soil quality and will tolerate different mediums--clay, sand, or even a few rocks. However, it prefers a spot that drains quickly.

Syriacus is drought-tolerant. Please give it some water during dry spells, but it will survive in between and bounce back from any stress.

Other Common Names for the Syriacus

This species, when referring to scarlet or another color, also carries other common names, including the following:

  • Rose of China
  • Rose-of-Sharon
  • Rose of Sharon
  • Althea

This species has no connection to roses, despite the nickname Rose of China.

The Red Shrubs Will Draw Pollinators To Your Yard

Pollinator insects, including bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, cannot resist the radiant scarlet blossoms on your Rose of China.

In addition to the nectar attracting visitors, ground-feeding birds may take cover in yours when they need to hide from predators.

However, one animal does not prefer the Syriacus: the whitetail deer. Deers seem to find flower' fragrances too floral so they will snack on them only as a last option.

Red Hibiscus Blooms In Mid-Summer

Prolific flowers appear on the Syriacus by mid-summer. In the warmest climates, the blossoms continue well into the autumn.

The flowers are large, intense coral scarlet, up to four inches, and showy. They have a lovely double layer of five velvety petals. The flower's center is golden yellow or orange, creating a stunning, warm tonal effect against the scarlet petals. Most often, the blossoms only live for one day, with a new replacement emerging right behind.

This Red Shrub Has Dark Glossy Foliage

The foliage of this shrub is beautiful. It features dark green, glossy leaves with coarse teeth around the margins. The leaves alternate along the stem.

T.N. Nursery suggests Red Hibiscus Shrubs for anyone who wants a bold scarlet-flowering plant that blooms in the last half of summer and into the fall. Order from T.N. Nursery today.
