Joys of Gardening

Gardening is enjoyed by many people the world over, from small window boxes filled with flowers to massive mega gardens that spread over multiple acres. It's no wonder why it's such a popular hobby. Few things in life can compare to planting a seed and nurturing it, watching it grow until it blooms into a beautiful plant you can be proud of.

A critical factor in having a beautiful and thriving garden is to find plants that complement one another. Consider using trees as a focal point for your garden. If planting deciduous trees, consider contrasting them with evergreens. Even during the winter months, evergreens will help your garden retain its beauty as they stay green year-round.

When planting rose bushes, consider doing so within a ground cover. Suggestions include clover, forget-me-nots, or alyssum. For planting perennials, plant them at different heights and group them by color. There are many different types of flowers to choose from, and there's no need to limit yourself to just lilies or tulips. Try other, more exotic flowers to spice up your garden and give it a little flair. For best results, reference a color wheel to give you an idea of which flowers' colors compliment one another.

For gardens with many white flowers, yellow, or other very light colors, offset it with a border or backdrop of green, such as a hedge. The contrast when the flowers bloom will enhance the appearance of the flowers and bring out the brilliance of the flowers bloom.

Shrubs, ferns, and other types of greenery can fill any empty spaces in your garden and are an excellent choice to hide areas of your garden that you don't want others to see.

Lastly, consider adding a few fun and exciting pieces of sculpture to your garden. If your garden is bright and colorful, use statuary of a neutral shade, like stone or grey. If you have a less colorful garden, consider contrasting it with more colorful decorations such as a multicolored mirror ball.

Another fun idea is to plant your garden around a small set of outdoor tables and chairs with path stones leading to it. That will allow you to sip tea or coffee in the garden, an oasis of tranquility surrounded by the fruits of your gardening labor.

A properly planned garden will give you tons of fun and enjoyment for years, but almost as much enjoyment can be gleaned from the planning and planting process. So, go on out there, select your plants and get to digging! Don't be afraid to get dirty. There's no hurt in the dirt!
