Applications of Live Fascines

Live fascines are a natural method for stabilizing streambanks, slopes, and areas requiring long-term erosion control. They are made from bundles of dormant, freshly cut woody stems that stay alive and can root after installation. When placed in moist soil, these fascines grow roots along their length, forming a living structure that holds soil in place and adjusts to changing water flow.

TN Nursery supplies live fascines in bundles of 25, utilizing native species selected for their rapid growth and strength in restoration projects. As these cuttings grow, they create thick vegetation that strengthens streambanks and slopes, slows down runoff, and provides lasting erosion control through natural plant growth, rather than relying solely on engineered solutions.

Purpose of Dead Fascines in Erosion Control

Dead fascines serve a different role and are intended strictly for temporary erosion and sediment management. These bundles consist of non-living woody material. Dead fascines have a distinct purpose and are used only for short-term erosion and sediment control. They are made from non-living woody material that will not root or grow.

Their main job is to slow down surface water, trap sediment, and protect bare soil during construction, grading, or other temporary site work. This is needed. Still, long-term stabilization or ecological restoration is not a requirement. They are often chosen as a cost-effective, short-duration solution rather than a permanent one.

Choosing the Right Fascine for Streambanks and Slopes

Live fascines give lasting support and ecological benefits, while dead fascines offer short-term protection at a lower initial cost. The right choice depends on your project goals. For lasting soil stability, optimal plant growth, and a better habitat, live fascines are the best choice. For temporary construction or sediment control, dead fascines are usually used to manage erosion until the project is finished.

Native Species Selection and Bundle Composition

Fascine bundles utilize a variety of native woody plants selected for their effectiveness, rather than their uniformity. Common choices include black, silky, or sandbar willow because they root well in wet areas, and dogwoods for their strong roots that hold soil. In wetter spots, buttonbush can help stabilize banks, while elderberry or ninebark can make slopes more resilient in drier areas.

The exact mix of species may change depending on the season and location. All fascines are made from cuttings, not rooted plants, and are assembled using years of field experience to ensure they meet the site’s specific needs.
