Plants that Thrive In California

California has some of the best weather on Earth. Some plants grow far better in the sunny California weather than others. And these plants, in particular, are a perfect match for the state's unique climate.

Redbud Trees

As the name suggests, redbud trees erupt in beautiful reddish-purple flowers every spring. What's more, the tree is even one of the very first to bloom as the weather warms up. And when fall approaches, those beautiful colors will fade into an equally majestic golden hue. While this tree loves the sun, it will also appreciate shade. This makes it a perfect addition to the yards of a typical Californian home. The redbud tree grows wild in certain parts of California.

Walking Fern

The walking fern or Asplenium rhizophyllum is a perennial fern with a truly unique look. The leaves have a beautifully smooth green appearance. This beauty is further enhanced by the fact that it has long tapering fronds. These beautiful leaves can quickly sprout into more fronds when touching the ground. This creates an effect where it seems like the plant is walking along - hence its evocative name. The plants grow pretty well in California. However, the sun can sometimes be a little too much for them. As such, it's usually a good idea to plant walking ferns in partially shaded areas. Remember, they do like the sun. But they shouldn't be constantly exposed to it throughout the day.

Red Daylily

The red daylily is one of the most beautiful daylilies. The plant's red-orange flower has a yellow center evocative of a sunny Californian day. The sharp red color makes it a perfect pairing with the green of ferns, shrubbery, and mosses. The plant is also famous for its hardiness. The red daylily might appear to be delicate. But it'll hold up under almost anything Californian weather has to offer. This includes everything from winter nights to summer days. The red daylily can grow in both full sun and shade. But full sunlight will produce the best results. Besides sunlight and somewhat moist soil, the plant won't need much additional care in California.

White Spirea Plant

The white spirea is an excellent choice of shrubbery for Californians. The plant provides a fantastic wealth of colors that can complement almost any area. The white spirea can grow up to ten feet in height and twenty feet in width. This creates a perfect blanket of dense greenery to balance the appearance of any area. However, the plant's true claim to fame comes from its ability to add color. Despite its name, the white spirea can flower in various colors during the fall. This makes it easy to add complementary colors to any given area. But the plant produces even more color thanks to its ability to attract butterflies. The beautiful insects find the white spirea's blossoms irresistible. As such, one can always expect beautiful butterflies to appear as plant flowers. The plant can grow in the shade. However, it's a perfect match for California because it loves full sunlight. It's even tolerant of periods where rain becomes somewhat sparse
